Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of Sharjah Family and Community Council, is perceived as one of the region’s leading figures in women’s empowerment, humanitarian work, and community development.
Through a visionary and human-centered approach, Her Highness continues to lead a long-lasting journey focused on building healthier, more empowered, and sustainable communities through initiatives and organizations dedicated to supporting women, families, childhood, education, culture, humanitarian work, and quality of life.
Her Highness has launched numerous pioneering initiatives that have positively impacted women, youth, and families across the UAE and beyond, while establishing a lifelong humanitarian and developmental contribution on both regional and international levels.
A Comprehensive Vision for Women’s Sports
Driven by her belief in the role of sports in building confidence, health, and elevating the quality of life, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi has placed the development of women’s sports among Sharjah’s strategic priorities, working to provide an integrated sports environment that supports women’s participation and creates opportunities for growth and excellence.
For more than four decades, Her Highness’s vision has played a vital role in strengthening the presence of women’s sports in Sharjah and the region, at a time when women’s participation in sport was still limited. This journey began in 1982 with the inauguration of Al Montazah Club for Girls, a dedicated social and sports space that respected women’s privacy and opened the door for girls and women to practice sports in a safe environment, while aligning with the key values of the community of Sharjah.
As society evolved and women’s presence expanded across different fields, this vision continued to develop through a series of transformative milestones. Al Montazah Club for Girls later expanded into “Sharjah Ladies Club”, which later introduced the Women’s Sports Department, leading ultimately to the establishment of Sharjah Women’s Sports in 2016 as a specialized entity dedicated to advancing women’s sports through a more comprehensive and professional framework.
The impact of this vision extended beyond the boundaries of Sharjah and the UAE through Her Highness’s direction to organize the GCC Women’s Sports Club Tournament in 1997. The tournament created an early platform for competition and connection among female athletes across the Gulf, while establishing an inspiring model that helped expand the presence of women’s sports within clubs and sports entities across the region. This successful experience marked the beginning of launching the Arab Women’s Sports Tournament in 2012, the first Arab sporting event of its kind that encourages women’s sports at the Arab clubs’ level.
Key Initiatives & Milestones
Over the years, this vision has evolved into an integrated framework that includes the establishment of Sharjah Women’s Sports, the development of the Sharjah Women’s Sports Olympic Center, the launch of school and community sports initiatives, and the Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi Award for Sports Excellence. Together, these efforts have instilled the presence of sport in the lives of passionate girls and women, while creating diverse pathways for talent identification, development, and competitive growth.
These projects have become central pillars of a women’s sports model that brings together social participation, competitive preparation, and scientific and healthcare support within an environment aligned with the evolution of modern sport and committed to expanding opportunities for women to grow and excel.
