The first day of the fifth edition of the School Athletics Championship concluded on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at the Sharjah Women's Sports Olympic Centre in Al-Falah. The event witnessed the participation of 470 female students representing 17 schools from Sharjah. The participants competed in a variety of events, including 60m, 150m, and 300m races, long jump, and shot put.
A Legacy of Success: Over 1,400 Participants So Far
The School Athletics Championship, organized by the Sharjah Women’s Sports Organisation, has seen remarkable progress over its four previous editions, fostering a vibrant culture of sports among schoolgirls. The championship serves as a pioneering initiative that combines competitive spirit with a comprehensive athletic environment, supporting Olympic sports. With over 1,400 students participating across the first four editions, the championship has successfully promoted a culture of physical activity and strengthened community engagement in sports.
Clear Guidelines to Elevate Athletic Standards
The championship attracts students across three age categories: 9-10 years, 11-12 years, and 13-14 years. To uphold the championship's high standards, participants are required to meet a minimum performance threshold to qualify for awards. This policy encourages schools to enhance their training programs and maintain consistent preparation throughout the year. By doing so, the championship emphasizes the importance of athletic excellence and the role of physical activity in fostering sustainable development for students.
Scientific Assessments for Athletic Development
Speaking about the event's scientific component, Edgar Chillon, Head of Technical Planning and Monitoring Section, stated:
"These assessments are not only aimed at improving athletic performance but also at creating precise reference standards that reflect local physical characteristics. This enables reliable comparisons and supports the systematic and informed development of community sports."
The championship integrates a comprehensive program of scientific assessments designed to analyze and evaluate the physical attributes that influence athletic performance.
Athletic Experts: Sharjah's Students Show Exceptional Olympic Potential
Jama Aden, a world-renowned athletics coach and advisor to the Athletics Department at SWS, praised the students’ performances during the first day of the championship, saying:
"We have observed remarkable physical capabilities among the participants, demonstrating a range of attributes suited for various Olympic sports. From speed and strength-based events to endurance and coordination-intensive disciplines, the potential here is immense. By prioritizing sports within schools, we can holistically develop these capabilities, paving the way for these students to achieve success at both national and international levels."
Anticipation Builds for the Championship’s Grand Finale
The championship continues until Thursday, January 16, 2025, concluding with the crowning of the winners and the recognition of participating schools and coaches. The event highlights Sharjah's commitment to advancing women’s sports and its status as a leading center for fostering athletic excellence in the region.
